For my fifth birthday, my grandmother gave me a monogrammed locket. It was the first piece of jewelry that was meant just for me and I loved it! I remember seeing the pretty curly initials JPE and knowing they were my own. I remember opening the locket and being excited about what photos I'd put in it. And, I remember thinking "I'm going to keep this forever because my Nana gave it to me."
I have such great memories of my grandmother. She was a great cook, an amazing quilt maker and knitter, a woman who was the epitome of simple and classic style, and she always wore the perfect shade of red lipstick (I'm still searching for my perfect red!). And she was generous in ways I never knew untilI very recently: Every time we'd visit my grandparents, my grandmother would secretly slip my mother a $20 bill and tell her "Go and do something nice with Judi."
My grandmother passed away a couple of years after she gifted me with the locket and I've never forgotten her. I'm so glad I have the stories I have of her, and the locket that she so thoughtfully gave to me as a reminder.
My name is Judi and I make sustainable fine jewelry. I wake up happy every day because I'm able to do what I love for a living.
