The end of summer always fills me with a huge sense of anticipation. I look forward to crisp fall nights, crunchy apples, sweet pumpkins, vibrant foliage, and a return to a bit of normalcy after everyone is back from summer travels. There’s incredible excitement and energy in the air, and an almost tactile sense of hope for good and new things to come.
For me, September really is a second New Year and I’m feeling it this year more than ever. Sometime last spring, while I was up to my eyes in homework and studio projects at FIT, I had a sudden and clear vision that I was going to start my own business. My desire—if not need—to do this was powerful and intensely frightening, and I couldn’t ignore it. So the day after graduation I began building plans for my business, working on my first collection of jewelry, expanding my network, and seizing all opportunities to learn everything possible about my new and chosen field. My plans shifted and evolved throughout summer and I found that some of my ideas were great while others were simply awful! What kept (and still keeps) me going is the incredible group of friends, family, colleagues, and new acquaintances who have given me sage advice, rousing encouragement, and the occasional shoulder on which to cry. I’ve asked for more help and guidance than I ever have before and I’ve gotten more than I could’ve hoped for in return.
I’m really lucky. And I’m really grateful. So this post is a shout-out to ALL of the people who’ve helped me grow in the past year and who continue to challenge, support, and love me even when I make it difficult: Ima and Papa. Frankie, Shim, Susan, Ru, Eve, Robyn, and Margaret, my sisters from other mothers. Jack and Armando. Betsy and Olav. My FIT friends and professors. The Brooklyn Metal Works crew. My “Melrose” family. My teachers and family at Mala Yoga. There are so many people who have been beyond generous with their time and encouragement and they prove that with community, everything is possible!
And there’s one person who gets an extra loud shout-out: Lance Ehlers. Lance designed my beautiful new logo and awesome hallmark. He gave me a graphic identity! I am so proud, and I’m so humbled.
So thank you thank you thank you and Happy New New Year!
